makes me sad how people treat their chameleons

Whenever I look at cham media, it always upsets me. Why?

I've had a panther chameleon for 2 years now. Me and my mother care for him. We bought him in some pet shop, i don't know. The guy was about 6 months then and very thin. You could almost see his bones. I dont think the workers there fed him properly.

We've been very careful and, whats even more important, patient with him since the beginning. It's very crucial to treat your pet gently so it gets used to you; chameleons are very easily stressed, but people dont pay much attention to that since they don't make any noise or hear anything. That makes me think.

Why do people show more compassion to animals that make sounds? Do they unconciously think that they could communicate with them better because of that? Because humans consider speech a basic form of communication? It makes them more "human", almost? Cats and dogs show some human-like traits, so I guess it makes sense people feel more comfortable with them. I guess so, at least.

I have also noticed before that people pay attention to eyes a lot more than they should. But thats a story for another time.

Whenever I see people with chameleons online, they're literally just flexing having a pretty thing. Like a christmas ornament. Most chameleons are either underfed or very, very stressed. I thought that if you have an animal for a certain amount of time, you'll slowly start understanding when that animal is upset and stressed. And if not, you should do research. I mean, you should do research before anyway.

That's the problem i think. A lot of people owning exotic animals don't know anything about them. Constantly touch them, because it's fun, and have no idea about the consequences of keeping an animal distressed all the time.

All of the time I see tiktoks and reels where people hold their chameleon and the guy is so mad you have no idea. They touch the pet and its eyes go so deep into their skull that i think it might hurt.

Its important to know when and why your companion is feeing shitty and i would recommend being patient with them until they start to trust you themselves... Otherwise don't be surprised why your chameleon is "always in ugly colors". Thats because you're stressing them out!
